Lawyers’ Convention Today

first_imgThe commercial city of Ganta in Nimba County will again witness another historic event when lawyers from across the country assemble there today to attend their 5th convention.Strategy on the proposed Continue Legal Education Program and an amendment to the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA) Constitution are some of the major issues expected to top today’s agenda, the Bar president, Cllr. Moses Paegar, has said. Last weekend, members of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) converged at the same venue for their 3rd Annual Congress during which they elected a new corps of officers headed by the president-elect, Charles B. Coffey.Unlike the gathering of journalists, Cllr. Paegar said today’s event is designed to provide refresher training for some of the lawyers and non-lawyers to bring them up to speed on some of the newly introduced statutes (laws), rules, changes in court decisions, and legislative changes to the laws that are applicable to the justice system. The theme of the three day LNBA Ganta Convention is “Enhancing Economic Integration, Rule of Law and Democratic Governance of West Africa.” The LNBA leadership has selected Chief Justice Francis Saye Korkpor to deliver the keynote address. Legal practitioners from La Cote d’Ivoire, Sierra Leone and the African Bar Association (ABA) will be on hand to present concept papers at the convention.Cllr. Paegar said legal education programs have been adopted by other bars in the sub-region from which lawyers are given refresher courses on both procedural and substantive laws. The training involves laws on new developments and every aspect of the law, including those laden with ethical issues.“We should not be left behind to put in place a robust continuing legal education; and so, we are working with other partners like the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to adopt the rule for 2017,” Paegar noted. He said the program will also provide non-lawyers with access to legal education in various areas of the law, adding: “only if they so desire, because the program is not limited to lawyers alone, but it is mandatory that they attend.”Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
