Lee Kuan Yew to Speak at Rice

Baker III Institute for Public Policy.His presentation will be held in the Grand Hall of the RiceMemorial Center starting at 5 p.m. The senior minister, and former primeminister of Singapore, will be available for a brief follow-up session withreporters from 6 p.m. until 6:15 p.m. The title of the senior minister’s speech is “Melt-down in EastAsia.” He will discuss what went wrong in Asia that brought on the currenteconomic crisis, which has had an impact on financial markets around the world,and provide his thinking on the consequences and possible solutions. There willbe a question-and-answer period following his speech.“Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s elder statesman, is an architect ofthe Asian model of economic development,” said Edward Djerejian, director of theBaker Institute. “His appearance at the Baker Institute could not be moretimely, given the current economic situation in Asia and its impact on theglobal economy. His views on how to contain the current situation and not haveit deteriorate further, and how to move forward the process of trade,investments and economic activity will be of great interest.”Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s founding father, served as primeminister from 1959 until 1990. After he stepped down from that post in 1990, hewas appointed to his current position. In 1954 he helped found the People’sAction Party (PAP) and served as its secretary-general until 1992.The Rice Memorial Center (RMC) can be reached by takingEntrance 13 off of Rice Boulevard and then proceeding through two stop signs.The RMC is on the left after the second stop sign.
