Giant Fossil Penguins Lived in Warm Waters

first_img“Giant prehistoric penguins?  In Peru?” puzzled a reporter on Science Daily.  “It sounds more like something out of Hollywood than science,” but a fossil penguin you could look eye to eye with has been found that far north.  “We tend to think of penguins as being cold-adapted species,” said one of the discoverers,” but not all species live in cold waters.  These fossils “seem to contradict some of what we think we know about the relationship between penguins and climate,” she said.    This one was surprising not only for its locale and size (1.5m standing height).  It comes from a stratum considered “tens of millions of years earlier than expected and during a period when the earth was much warmer than it is now.”  See also National Geographic and EurekAlert.Summing up: (1) the fossils are tens of millions of years out of order.  (2) One of the two species was larger than any penguin alive today – as tall as a human.  (3) It had a larger beak: “Both new species had long narrow pointed beaks — now believed to be an ancestral beak shape for all penguins.”  (3) It was found at an equatorial latitude, indicating a richer biodiversity in the past.  (4) Everyone was surprised by these findings.  Conclusion: another victory for evolutionism.    Encore:  (5)… “during a period when the earth was much warmer than it is now” (36 million years ago).  Conclusion: we must take drastic measures because humans are responsible for global warming.(Visited 8 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

Android inventor Andy Rubin unveils smart home Amazon “killer”

first_imgFollow the Puck Internet of Things Makes it Easier to Steal You… David Curry Related Posts Andy Rubin, the founder of Android, has unveiled a smart home hub called Essential Home, one of two devices unveiled this week as part of his new technology brand.Essential Home shares a lot of similarities with Amazon Echo and Google Home, including voice commands, responses, and support for third-party devices.See Also: Hive goes the subscription route with “smart home as a service”Instead of limiting interaction to voice, Home comes with a round display that shows information and lets users tap to talk. If traffic is particularly bad on one morning, it will tell you to set off a few minutes early.Rubin’s company is also launching a new operating system, called Ambient OS, which can supposedly introduce itself to new and existing smart home devices without any manual pairing. The automatic integration is good for developers, according to Essential, as it allows them to write applications that “provide a unified experience across multiple devices.”Home will talk to devices over the home network, instead of going back and forth in the cloud. Essential also plans to limit the amount of information sent to the cloud, taking a page straight out of Apple’s privacy book.No known when it will launchNo price has been announced for the Home and we don’t know when it will launch in the U.S.Rubin launched the Essential Phone this week as well, a high-end Android device that has a near bezel-less display and all the latest specs. Rick Pitino Questions Miami’s Handling Of Potentially-Concussed Player Who Montrezl Harrell Hit With Ball

first_imgMiami player injured after being pegged with ball.Following his team’s two-point victory against Miami Saturday afternoon, Louisville coach Rick Pitino expressed some concern for the way the Hurricanes handled a potentially-concussed player. In the first half of the contest, Cardinals’ senior forward Montrezl Harrell threw the basketball at the face of Miami center Tonye Jekiri. Harrell was given a Flagrant 1 after referees reviewed the play. The Louisville star said following the 55-53 victory the throw was not intentional, though Hurricanes’ coach Jim Larranaga disagreed. Jekeri, a starter for Miami, began the second half on the bench. Larranaga said after the game his player was suffering from severe headaches. Miami’s trainers originally believed the 7-foot big man had a concussion, before allowing him back into the game. Miami’s handling of Jekeri was troubling to Pitino. Here’s what the Louisville coach said during his post-game press conference, courtesy of the Courier-Journal:“Here’s the ironic thing: Coach Larranaga walked over to the officials, all the way over to the other side. I’ve never seen that. I wanted to know what (Larranaga said). The official says, ‘Well, he wanted to let me know that the big guy has a concussion on that play.’ I said, ‘What motive do you need to know that? He’s back in the game.’“So I called (Louisville football coach) Bobby Petrino — this is no joke — I said, ‘Get a hold of that Miami doctor because, in 15 minutes, a kid went from a concussion to playing and totally healthy.’ We’re sending a plane down to hire that doctor for football. We will never have a concussion ever again. He was back 3-4 minutes later. He walked all the way over there to tell him he had a concussion, then he was back in the game.”That’s a pretty direct calling out of Miami from Pitino. Concussions are obviously something that should be taken very seriously, but it’s impossible to know if the Hurricanes’ medical staff followed protocol or not. This likely won’t be the last we hear of this incident. [Courier-Journal]last_img read more

PMO says gambling problem prompted Brampton MPs sudden resignation

first_imgOTTAWA — Raj Grewal’s sudden resignation as a Liberal MP was prompted by a gambling problem, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.Grewal, who represented the riding of Brampton East, announced his immediate resignation Thursday, citing unspecified personal and medical reasons. On Friday, the PMO issued a statement saying that Grewal had informed the office earlier this week “that he is undergoing serious personal challenges and that he is receiving treatment from a health professional related to a gambling problem that led him to incur significant personal debts.“Based on these circumstances, we agreed that his decision to resign as Member of Parliament for Brampton East was the right one. We hope he receives the support he needs.”The statement, issued in response to numerous media inquiries, went on to say: “We are not aware of an investigation by the Peel Regional Police. We are aware of inquiries by the RCMP regarding the circumstances that were the subject of a complaint to the ethics commissioner about Mr. Grewal earlier this year.”Ethics watchdog Mario Dion launched a formal inquiry last May after two opposition MPs expressed concerns that Grewal might have been in a conflict of interest when he invited a construction executive — who was paying Grewal for legal services at the time — to official events with Justin Trudeau during the prime minister’s trip to India early this year. The conflict-of-interest code prohibits MPs from using their positions to further their private interests or to improperly further another person’s interests. It’s not clear what prompted the PMO’s reference to the Peel police and a spokesperson for the force declined to comment.“We do not confirm if we are investigating an individual or if there is an active investigation,” said Const. Akhil Mooken. “The only time we would share information on an individual is if charges were laid.”The Canadian Presslast_img read more

first_imgCALGARY – A study by a sustainable energy research group predicts the federal government’s purchase of the Trans Mountain pipeline will add significantly to the deficit next year. The study by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis says the buying the Kinder Morgan Canada assets, plus planning and construction costs, will put $6.5 billion in unplanned spending on the books for the 2018-19 fiscal year.Study authors Tom Sanzillo and Kathy Hipple say that until the Ottawa clarifies how it plans to account for the spending, there’s a risk the purchase could add 36 per cent to the projected $18.1-billion deficit. The federal government agreed to buy the existing pipeline, expansion project and terminals from Kinder Morgan Canada for $4.5 billion after the company threatened to walk away from the Trans Mountain expansion project. The government has said it doesn’t plan to be a long-term owner and is looking for buyers, including Indigenous communities, pension funds and the Alberta government. The Trans Mountain expansion project has faced significant opposition over concerns of oil spills, tanker traffic and increased oilsands production.last_img read more

Nobody has courage to make movie on Prophet Mohammed Giriraj Singh

first_imgNew Delhi,: Hours after a Bihar court granted him bail in a poll code violation case for making controversial remarks against the Muslim community, Union minister Giriraj Singh Tuesday made another provocative statement. In an apparent reference to the controversial Malayalam movie, the minister said anybody can make a film like “Sexy Durga” but nobody has the courage to make one on Prophet Mohammed or Fatima. Giriraj Singh was addressing a public meeting in support of BJP’s South Delhi candidate Ramesh Bidhuri. At the rally, Bidhuri also used a Hindi slur against Aam Aadmi Party leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and accused him of stalling the prosecution of former Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader Kanhaiya Kumar in a sedition case. Giriraj Singh, who is the BJP candidate against Kanhaiya Kumar for Bihar’s Begusarai seat, charged that Kejriwal is part of the “tukde tukde gang”. Earlier in the day, the minister surrendered before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Begusarai and was granted bail in the poll violation case. The Election Commission had issued a show cause notice to Giriraj Singh over his anti-Muslim remarks at an election rally. “I didn’t say any such thing in Begusarai, still a case was registered against me. I just said that the slogan Vande Mataram made India independent. I said the country will show the door to any person who can’t chant Vande Mataram, he said at the meeting in Delhi. “The Hindus were abused in Begusarai. Some people said Hindus eat beef and drink liquor at night. I informed the Election Commission, but it too didn”t take action,” the minister said. “Abusing Hindus has become a habit for some people,” he said. Referring to the movie that was later released as S Durga, he said if he would send to hell anyone who referred to his mother or sister in such terms. The Union minister also mentioned the burqa ban in Sri Lanka after the recent terror attacks there. Giriraj Singh claimed that the United Nations declared Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist because “people in India gave power to Modi”. The minister said he “feared” that the “tukde-tukde gang” might ask the United Nations to furnish evidence to prove it declared Masood as a global terrorist. Attacking Mamata Banerjee, he said the West Bengal chief minister “gets angry and slaps people who say ‘Jai Shri Ram’. Let’s see who will slap us”. A video has surfaced on social media, where Banerjee can be purportedly seen stopping her car at a place in West Midnapore district when people chanted “Jai Shri Ram” slogan as her convoy was passing the area. The people fled the spot as soon as she got out of her car.last_img read more

Tuition Assistance Could Help Personnel Obtain Licenses Family Council to Recommend

first_imgService members should be able to use their tuition assistance benefit to cover the cost of obtaining professional licenses and technical certifications, members of the DOD Military Family Readiness Council said last week. The department should consider opening up the use of tuition assistance funding for uses beyond accredited education institutions since gaining technical certifications will be one of the primary avenues “our young men and women who are leaving the service are going to find employment in the civilian sector,” Sergeant Major of the Army Dan Dailey said at the Sept. 14 meeting. Not every soldier wants to attend college, Dailey said. The idea will be one of five the council submits to the secretary of defense as part of its annual recommendations for supporting military families, reported Military Times. The recommendation would have to go through a number of steps before the department approves it.The council also wants to recommend that service members be able to transfer their tuition assistance benefit to spouses. Currently, only spouses of junior personnel are eligible for the Military Spouse Career Advancement Account program, which helps pay for spouses’ costs associated with pursuing licenses, certificates, certifications or associate degrees, according to the story.Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force James Cody said the council and DOD should collaborate to study how education benefits affect the entire military family. There may be periods when a service member doesn’t take advantage of the tuition assistance benefit to enroll in a college class but a spouse could, Cody said. Dan Cohen AUTHORlast_img read more
