Premier League plan to pilot safe standing areas, 28 years after Hillsborough

first_img Celtic introduced safe standing at Celtic Park last season 1 The Premier League has written to its clubs to gauge their interest in establishing safe standing at top-flight clubs.?Standing at football matches in the top two divisions was banned following the 1989 Hillsborough disaster which saw 96 Liverpool fans tragically lose their lives. There has been a growing interest across all divisions in the UK for a return to some form of standing at matches and safe standing, also known as rail seating is seen as the best option, according to the Daily Mail.Clubs were asked to indicate their interest in a questionnaire recently sent to all teams in the division. The system is straight forward: when standing is permitted, supporters are given a designated ‘seat’ but the seat can be locked upright. For UEFA matches, which must be all-seater, stadium staff can unlock the seats and unfold them.Celtic introduced an area of 2,600 rail seats at Celtic Park last season and that move has been seen as a success. Not all sections of the football community support the move, the Hillsborough Family Support Group remain firmly opposed. There is no suggestions clubs will be obliged to take part in the pilot which could be rolled out in the next few years.last_img read more
