Looking forward – watch this space Proposal for a council directive establishing a general framework forinforming and consulting employees in the European Community l This proposed directive will apply to all “public or private undertakingscarrying out an economic activity, whether or not operating for gain, which arelocated within the territory of the member states of the European Community andhave at least 50 employees”. l This draft National Information and Consultation Directive is currentlyblocked by Denmark, Germany, Ireland and the UK. As a result of the recentredundancies at Marks & Spencer in France, the French government is pushingfor it to go ahead. http://europa.eu.int/eur-lex/en/com/ dat/1998/en_598PC0612.html Employee Consultation Rights Bill – private member’s bill introduced to theHouse of Commons on 17 January 2001 by Kelvin Hopkins, Labour, Luton North l This private member’s bill seeks to implement the above proposeddirective. If enacted it will require employers with more than 50 employers inan “undertaking” to consult with workforce representatives on anymajor issues,(including proposed redundancies), which will directly affectemployees.
