Tevin Farmer, Eddie Hearn plan to publicly call out Gervonta Davis with an offer

first_imgOf course, Farmer wasn’t trying to hear that on his own turf, letting Carroll know as much Wednesday during the press conference. If @TevinFarmer22 and @Jono_Carroll were the last two on Earth – who’s making it out alive? 🤔😂#FarmerCarroll pic.twitter.com/voIExsEPlb— DAZN USA (@DAZN_USA) March 13, 2019“I want to beat everybody up that I fight, not just him,” Farmer said. “Everybody.”If he does that — and emphatically — Friday night … then, watch out for the in-ring call-out to Davis. The money will be there for champ “Tank” and Farmer’s going to make sure it’s there for him, too. As the fellow champ should. Hearn’s joke contained some truth in jest. In facing Jono Carroll on Friday night at Temple University’s Liacouras Center — about five minutes away from where the champ grew up in Philadelphia — Farmer will be making his third title defense in six months, so he’s earned the right to show up fashionably late on his home turf. And while rocking a pair of slides. (Why not? He’s comfortable at home).Join DAZN and watch Farmer vs. Carroll on March 15Being that fighting world champion, he has also earned the right to request top dollar, especially when talking about a unification bout between he and WBA junior lightweight titleholder Gervonta Davis. If Farmer defeats Carroll on Friday night — something he’s favored to do, convincingly — he and Hearn are expected to publicly call out Davis to make the highly-anticipated fight finally happen.Farmer and Davis have slung mud at each other on social media for five years strong.Still, no fight. They have confronted each other face-to-face on more than one occasion.Still … no fight.Since all else has failed, this could be the last resort and Farmer and Hearn are treating it as such.Entering fight week, the Matchroom Boxing promoter vowed to publicly make Davis a “f— massive offer,” adding that $5 million sounds about right, and he doubled down on that promise while speaking with Sporting News on Wednesday.MORE: Tevin Farmer on why top fighters at 130 pounds aren’t facing each other“I think pretty serious,” Hearn said about going ahead with the public offer if Farmer does get past Carroll on Friday. “The reason I say public is I want the world to know. I’ve made several offers to Mayweather Promotions, obviously they’re his promotional company. They were multi-fight deals, this could just be one fight. A lot of it is out of frustration because I want to see that fight. I think the boxing fans and public are with me in that we want to see that fight.”Consider this public call-out a two-pronged approach — one relying on public pressure and the subsequent shaming that will go along with it; the other on a haul of cash significant enough for Floyd Mayweather Jr. to possibly make an exception and allow Davis to do a one-off fight against Farmer on DAZN.But if that indeed does wind up being the case, Farmer wants to make sure that the fight check cut for him is fair, too, because he’s earned it.“It got to make sense for the both of us. He’s getting paid ‘X’ amount of dollars, what’s Tevin Farmer getting paid?” the champ explained to SN. “It takes two to tango.”Recently, there has been some daylight in the long-stalled negotiations between Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder, so perhaps if that fight is made, it’ll have a trickle-down, ice-breaking effect on other mega bouts like a Davis-Farmer. But that’s not of Farmer’s immediate concern.“I don’t know nothing about that,” he told SN on Wednesday. “After Friday, then we could talk about the ‘Tank’ fight and what’s Tevin Farmer getting paid. It gotta make sense and it gotta be life-changing money for the both of us.Join DAZN and watch more than 100 fight nights a year“At the end of the day, the promoters are doing a hell of a job, but me and Davis built this fight up for five years. We built this! Five years … since 2014,” he continued. “If the money isn’t life- changing for the both of us, it’s not worth it. I want the fight.”The stern dislike that the super featherweights have for each other only further fuel Farmer (28-4-1, 6 KOs) wanting this fight.“You don’t pop s— [on social media] and then see each other in traffic and then walk away. That’s not what we do,” Farmer said. “There’s been a time, where he seen me and he walked over and there’s been a time where I seen him and I approached him. At least we know it’s real.”Also real is a chance for Carroll (16-0-1, 3 KOs) to step in and not only spoil Farmer’s plans, but put himself on the boxing map with an upset. The 26-year-old Irish fighter credits a three-fight deal with MTK Global in allowing him to concentrate on boxing full-time and he hasn’t looked back since. Now, making his U.S. debut, he’s hell-bent on becoming a world champ.“It’s going to be a really, really tough night and horrible night for him,” Carroll vowed to SN. “I’m coming away with that belt no matter what.” PHILADELPHIA — Eddie Hearn took the podium at Union Transfer, a concert venue in Philadelphia, and ribbed Tevin Farmer about being tardy to the final press conference Wednesday.“He was half an hour late,” Hearn said, drawing a wide grin from the IBF junior lightweight champion on the dais, “but you know, he’s become a little bit big time now.”last_img read more
